The Blind Side

Amazing story about a sad, homeless and huuuuge boy being adopted by a rich, skinny mom (Sandra Bullock). The movie is adorable, touching and heart warming, absolutely. Lovely movie, really and I am as always a fan of Sandra Bullock!

The Box
Got this one as a tip from a friend.. It’s about a couple (with Cameron Diaz!) who gets the choice to push a button and receive a million bucks and at the same time, let someone else die, or not to push the button and save someone’s life. Well.. this choice results in a very strange and uncommon movie which I didn’t particularly like a lot. However, I must say that it stimulates a great deal of thought.

Sweet Home Alabama
I love this movie! It’s so nineties! It’s about a typical girl from Alabama that escapes her hometown and goes to the big city to reinvent herself as a NYC socialite. But when she comes back to Alabama.. everything turns out different than expected, once again…

Rio
When Blu, a domesticated macaw from small-town Minnesota, meets the fiercely independent Jewel, he takes off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro with this bird of his dreams. Not the best animated movie I’ve ever seen, but definitely enjoyable to watch and funny from time to time!

Good Luck Chuck
FUNNY!!!! Chuck is a lucky charm to single women. After sleeping with him, they always find their prince on the white horse and most of his ex-girlfriends were married within a year after breaking up with him. But.. how can Chuck break the curse? I’d definitely recommend watching this movie!

Britney Spears concert!

Wednesday I went to Britney’s concert here, in Ahoy Rotterdam. And it was AWESOME. Even though she may not be the best singer out there, and even though she did not have the same sick choreos as before, she is just great. Nothing was too crazy for the show: fireworks, cars, gondolas, motors.. everything was there. And even though the reviews are quite horrible… well.. what did you expect? Britney without lip-syncing? No.. we know she always does so. It is just the nostalgia that makes it so great. Fortunately she also sung some of her old songs like Toxic, Stronger and One More Time. The best thing was that 90% of the other people were our age or even older. People who were in their teens when Britney was at her top. Oh that and a lot of gays, which makes an awesome audience if you ask me. Before her there were acts performed by Destinee & Paris (wow, these girls can sing! Great, GREAT performance, we loved them! You should definitely check out their youtube videos!) and Joe Jonas (we didn’t really know he was part of the Jonas Brothers haha, and found him pretty arrogant).

How to nail those upcoming midterms

Tags

, , ,

Just a few weeks to go and the first midterms of this academic year are here already. Do you feel ready for them, or are you – just like most of us – getting more and more stressed with every day that passes? If you’re part of the first category: please share your secrets with us! We’re dying to know! And.. if you’re part of the latter category: maybe the following tips will help you a bit to control your nerves.

Start studying now
I know it’s a simple tip, however pretty difficult to make it become reality. But imagine the feeling it gives you when you’ll receive a good grade within a few weeks. It really only takes some tough weeks of studying, then you’ll feel extremely glad and proud of yourself and you’ll have time to party all night long again. So for now: stop saying ‘I’ll study later’ and just take your books, go to the library and study that chapter!

Find a nice place to study
Probably your room serves you the most comfortable study environment: laptop near by, same for the fridge, roomies and lots of other distractions. Many of us even find ourself cleaning and tidying our rooms as a ‘essential thing to do before I can start studying’. Yeah right… So what I would suggest is to go to your university’s library to study there. Don’t let any of your friends know you’re there until you really believe you deserve a break. Then you can go for half an hour coffee and talks ๐Ÿ™‚ When you set up these agreements with friends and everyone keeps his/her word, this absolutely is an excellent way to study. You do not miss you social contacts so no need for Facebook all the time! While on the other hand you cannot talk and/or sign to your friends all the time. So make sure you study in different rooms of the library!

What I also do a lot during those exam weeks is going to a cheap restaurant with friends as a dinner break. We’re only allowed to spend there 3 quarters up to an hour, have some chilling time (what’s better than a delicious dinner in a cosy restaurant!) and also a good motivation and enough energy to study some more hours up to the time the library closes. Which is in our case usually 10 p.m.

Make sure you get enough sleep
While studying I tend to get really productive after 8 o’clock in the evening… which results in sleepless nights every now and then, especially when I didn’t plan it right so the workload has increased a lot those last nights before the exam is due ๐Ÿ˜‰
So, please… make sure you sleep enough in those weeks before the exams: it enables you to study more, more efficiently and to remember it better. And if you really still need it: you have enough energy-buffer to study all night long once that period ๐Ÿ˜‰

Buy healthy food
.. Like fruits, vegetables, yoghurts and muesli bars instead of fastfood and candy bars. Sure: sometimes you need comfort food and an energy boost, but even though they may indeed provide this energy boost: in the long run it exhausts you (something with the burning of sugar I believe, Google it ;-)) and also gives you a bad feeling about yourself. And those feelings are really undesirable when you still have to study a lot. So think twice in the supermarket!

Exercise!
Yeah it’s true.. instead of those candy bars and fastfood, you can better gain some energy from a short sports session. Go running or.. if you don’t like cardio etc, you can attend a class in the gym. Pilates can absolutely empty your mind for a moment to get it all clear again and zumba or spinning will enable you to lose some energy. So listen to yourself and your needs and pick something to enable yourself for an afternoon filled with studying again!

Be organized
Kinda silly, however it really works. Make sure the environment where you study is clean and tidy and make a schedule of the work you still need to do. It clears your mind and absolutely helps to prevent you from getting stressed and panicked. Therefore you should watch yourself and don’t make your schedule too ambitious: that won’t work at all! Be honest and real to yourself in what you can do in one day without getting stressed. Indeed: We should always try to prevent stress! ๐Ÿ™‚

Spend some time outdoors
It may sound odd, but going outside every day is so important! Go for a walk, spend some time at a lake with a good book or something. Anything. Getting some vitamin D and fresh air really is as important as getting enough sleep.

So good luck for now! Please, share your thoughts ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll go for a reading session again now, haha… two more chapters to go today!

Dead Poets Society
I started a deal with a friend: I would watch his favourite movies and in return he’d watch mine. The movies I listed for him to watch were: Dear John, Pride & Prejudice and Remember Me (and secretly I added a fourth one: The Horse Whisperer). His list for me contained: Dead Poets Society (his favourite of all time), The Shawshank Redemption and Good Will Hunting. So this was what triggered me to watch more ‘serious’ movies again from now on, ’cause this older film was absolutely great. A beautiful story and great quotes. An absolute ‘must see’!

Good Will Hunting
To be honest, the title of the movie didn’t appeal too much to me. However, I must confess that also this one was very good, although it was more close to the niche of movies I usually pick myself. Dramatic and thoughtful. The cleaning boy turns out to be a mathematical genious. And another ‘must see’…

Life as we Know It
When the best friends of Holly and Eric die in a car accident, they find out that they are chosen to take care of Holly and Eric’s baby daughter.. Even though they kinda hate each other. This story results in a hilarious movie which I absolutely enjoyed watching, thereby do I love movies with Katherine Heigl in general ๐Ÿ™‚

Grown Ups
Old study friends see each other again after years when their High School basketball coach dies. All of them has grown up into very different persons. Funny from time to time? Definitely. Adam Sandler and Salma Hayek? Great ingredients! In depth movie? Hmm.. not really ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I’m sure you’ll enjoy watching it with some friends on a rainy afternoon!

The Ugly Truth
Heard a lot about it and the only thing I can say: watch it! Yes.. another romantic comedy but definitely one of the better ones. It’s extremely funny ๐Ÿ™‚ A tv correspondent (Gerard Butler!!) with very ‘manly’ ideas on dating and love becomes the dating-advisor of the morning show presentor (Katherine Heigl!) to prove his ideas and theories. Believe me when I say that his results in some hilarious situations ๐Ÿ˜‰

Try something new every 30 days

A lot of people get stuck in the middle, while studying or working, time flies by forgotten. And at the same time all those people actually have dreams where they cannot find the time for. How does it come? In this wonderful and extremely inspirational video Mat Cutts explains how the philosophy of trying something new every 30 days can change your life. You can implement new habits and diminish bad habits. And no, those challenges don’t all have to be huge things! Trying to go to sleep before 12 o’clock for a month can also be a very useful challenge, or studying at least two hours a day!

What did I do so far? Well.. I tried new sports hours at our student gym. They offer the craziest courses like pole dance, under water hockey, beasting and lots more. I wanna try all these crazy things! Furthermore, I applied for being a board member for organizing a masterclass in May. Especially for my study (and other business and economics studies) participating in committees and boards is very important for your personal development and chances for jobs later on in your life. And guess what? I made it to the board! I will do the PR and I’m gonna learn so much from it! What my next challenge will be? I think it’ll have something to do with more sporting and less eating.. I’ll keep you up to date ๐Ÿ˜‰

So.. have you ever tried this before? What are your dreams, and.. more important: are you gonna try to make them become reality?

My three favourite albums at the moment!

Gavin deGraw – Sweeter

Gavin’s new album! And I loooooove it. It’s sweet, uptempo and catchy. With delicious lyrics and of course his warming voice. Besides the hit ‘Not over you’ there are a lot more great songs. My personal favourites are ‘Sweeter’ which could become a great second single, ‘Soldier’ for it’s sweet soul and ‘Candy’ and ‘Stealing’ for their great lyrics. A perfect album to listen to on a rainy afternoon, sitting all cuddled up at the couch with a book or so.

Viktoria by Maria Mena

I tell you, this album is soooooo beautiful. Ultimate relaxation. You should really check it out yourself, the only thing I can say about it that it’s absolutely great. It contains soft, sensitive songs. Fairylike. My favourites though are ‘Viktoria’, ‘Homeless’, ‘Secrets’, ‘Am I Supposed to Apologize?’ and ‘The Art of Forgiveness’.

Femme Fatale by Britney Spears

I’ve always been a fan of Britney, secretly. Especially her old songs. So when a friend asked me to join her to her Femme Fatale concert I didn’t think twice. Even though I don’t like all her songs as much, the more frequently you listen them the more you’re gonna appreciate them. Since the concert is next Wednesday, the album is on repeat now, so I can sing along the songs then! My absolute favourite is Criminal, ever heard a pop song with a flute as base? Cool hm? It’s still Britney, bitch.

KLM’s genious social media marketing

I showed you a marketing video of the Dutch maritime museum already earlier, but I’ve got another great one for you! KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) wanted to improve the awareness of their services through social media. They offer namely a service which claims to answer every question they receive through social media within an hour. Thow they did it? For 24 hours they answered รกll incoming tweets and Facebook messages personally. Very personally. Check out the vid, it’s a genious marketing trick! Because besides the awareness of KLM’s services, it also raised more coherency within the company itself. Great job!

This book was on my ‘to read’ list for a long time but I never actually borrowed it from the library to read it. Yes, I’d heard it is a great story, but.. about World War II and actually, I have heard so much about that already. It is interesting, of course, but to be honest I’ve never really been a fan of books and movies about the war.

Nonetheless, a couple of weeks ago I came across it in the library and took it with me, and I have to admit that everyone was right: what a great story! It is all written from the perspective of a little, nine year old boy whose father is a high commandant under Hitler. The storyline and angle is entirely different from every other book or movie I read/saw before! It is down to earth, simple, full of simple emotions and understandings of a child which provides an excellent and very interesting book. I don’t want to give away too much already about the storyline, it’s way better to find out yourself!

I finished it within two days and literally spend every spare moment on it! It feels so good to read a book that has that impact on you ๐Ÿ™‚ So when I finished it I was extremely curious for the movie. And, as soon as I got over my disappointment of the fact that the spoken language is English instead of German (really, that was such a bummer!) I have to say that the movie is nearly as good as the book. And that’s often not the case with filmed books! The only adjustments made to the story are those that really complement the movie better. So… I’d definitely recommend to read the book first and then watch the movie!
